Morgan State rides a seven game win streak into this afternoon's game with West Virginia after
winning the MEAC conference tournament championship game 68-61 over South Carolina State. The Bears also won the regular season conference title with a 27-9 overall record and a 15-1 tally in league play.Morgan State is led by senior guard Reggie Holmes, who averages 21.8 points and 4.3 rebounds per game, and sophomore forward Kevin Thompson (12.8 points, 11.9 rebounds per game). The pair combined for 35 points, 14 rebounds, and five blocks in the Bears championship win over the Bulldogs.
The Bears went 0-4 against other NCAA Tournament squads this season (Murray State, Minnesota, Louisville, Baylor), losing by an average of 16 points per game.
The Mountaineers comes into today's game having won six straight and eight of their last nine contests. Bob Huggins' squad, which is fresh off a Big East Tournament championship run, which featured wins over Cincinnati, Notre Dame, and Georgetown, is 27-6 overall.
West Virginia has three players that average double figures in scoring, led by senior forward Da'Sean Butler's 17.4 per contest. The Mountaineers, however, are better known for their defense as opponents have averaged just 63.8 points per game against them on the year.
The Mountaineers went 9-5 against tournament competition this season, scoring wins at the expense of Georgetown (No. 3 Midwest), Villanova (No. 2 South), Notre Dame (No. 6 South), Ohio State (No. 2 Midwest), Marquette (No. 6 East), Pittsburgh (No. 3 west), and Texas A&M (No. 5 South).
