Gibbons, BC roll into Hockey East title game

Officially.
Unofficially, Boston College already merits that tag, given the way the Eagles have come flying down the stretch here.
With Friday night’s 3-0 win over upstart Vermont in the first game of the Hockey East Tournament semifinal doubleheader at TD Garden, BC (24-10-3) is a blistering 12-2-1 since Jan. 29 and will carry an eight-game unbeaten streak (7-0-1) into tonight’s tournament final against either defending champ Boston University or Maine (7 p.m., NESN).
Seeded-second in this tournament, the Eagles are tied for fourth in the latest USCHO.com PairWise rankings – a reliable predictor of the NCAA field that will be announced Sunday. By the time the bids come out, BC might have its ninth Hockey East crown (third in four years) and even more momentum as it embarks on its quest for a second national title in three seasons.
“Getting hot at the right time is always important,” said Gibbons, a junior center who prepped at Thayer Academy and Salisbury (Conn.) School. “You want to be hot at the end of the year, winning games. It reminds me a lot of freshman year, which turned out pretty well.”
As for the individual honor, Gibbons (15 goals, a team-high 27 assists) said, “It’s pretty special. I battled hard all year for it. It was good to get rewarded for your efforts. But it just as easily could have been (linemate) Cam Atkinson (BC’s top gun at 24-21–45), so I feel bad that he didn’t get it.”
Over the previous 18 games, the line of Gibbons, Atkinson (a second-team pick) and Joe Whitney had been white-hot, combining for 29 goals. On this night, however, it was the less-heralded trio of senior center Ben Smith flanked by flashy freshman Chris Kreider (Boxford) and sophomore Jimmy Hayes (Dorchester) that did the damage. They each had a goal – one in every period – with Hayes adding a pair of assists.
“They were awesome,” Gibbons said. “Tonight they were the first line, no doubt about it. That’s another reason we’ve been good lately – our depth. We have four lines, and coach (Jerry York) just rolls them. Tonight they stole the show. They’ve been working hard and (the attention) is well-deserved.”
BC’s greatest achievement Friday was denting Vermont sophomore goaltender/rock wall Rob Madore. The pride of Pittsburgh had authored back-to-back 1-0 shutouts at New Hampshire last weekend as the eighth-seeded Catamounts stunned the top-seeded Wildcats, two games to one, in the quarterfinal series.
It was the first time UNH had been blanked in consecutive home games in the program’s 86-year history, and it made Vermont, a Frozen Four team last season, just the fourth No. 8 seed to make the semis in Hockey East’s 26-year history.
Madore carried a shutout streak of 135 minutes 52 seconds into this one, but Kreider finally broke through against him on a wicked wrister with 4:11 left in the first period. It was Kreider’s 14th goal of the season. (Madore’s streak ended at 151:41.)
“He’s able to make plays at top speed,” Vermont coach Kevin Sneddon said of Kreider.
Madore still wound up stopping 14 of 15 shots in the opening 20 minutes and made dazzling saves against Kreider (on a wraparound at the right post), Whitney (sliding across the crease) and Atkinson (backhander on a break).
Sneddon said the first-period assault (the Catamounts were outshot 15-8) put his team back on its heels.
“I thought we played pond hockey,” he said. “We stood around and watched in amazement. We all thought there were seven BC guys on the ice. They were just flying out there.”
Smith took the air out of Vermont’s balloon by scoring his 13th goal of the season with 7.9 seconds remaining in the second period. Freshman defenseman Philip Samuelsson (Ulf’s kid) made a nice play to avoid a Catamount at the left point, skated in along the wall and fed Smith, who was tightly marked at the right post but nudged it over the goal line for a 2-0 lead. Earlier in the period, Smith had hit the right post on a rush seconds after leaving the penalty box.
The goal was a bitter pill for Vermont, which had whiffed on three power plays in an 8:30 span during the period and had seen BC goaltender John Muse (30 saves for his first shutout of the season) stone senior winger Colin Vock on a shorthanded breakaway with 54 seconds left in the period.
“That was a two-goal swing,” Gibbons said of the save/goal sequence. “It kind of killed their momentum and sparked ours going into the third period. We were able to roll after that. Johnny Muse has been playing well lately.”
Hayes made it 3-0 at 3:06 of the third period, converting a pretty behind-the-back feed from Kreider, who was behind the net to Madore’s right.
Sophomore forward Matt Marshall of Hingham did not dress for Vermont, missing his fourth straight game as a healthy scratch. A fifth-round draft pick of Tampa Bay in 2007, Marshall is 1-4–5 in 33 games this season.
Vermont is still clinging to hopes of an at-large NCAA bid, although Sneddon said the possible scenarios are too difficult for him to understand. “I hope like heck we’re still playing” next weekend in the NCAA regionals, he said.
“We’ll just sit back (this weekend) and watch the scoreboard.”

Catamounts Make the Grade Among Men's & Women's NCAA Tournament Teams

Catamounts Make the Grade Among Men's & Women's NCAA Tournament Team

ORLANDO, Fla. - Earlier this week, The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport (TIDES) at the University of Central Florida released its annual study, “Academic Progress/Graduation Success Rate Study of Division I NCAA Women’s and Men’s Basketball Tournament Teams,” which compares graduation rates for Division I teams that have been selected for the men’s and women’s brackets of the 2010 NCAA Basketball Tournaments, and Vermont's men's and women's basketball programs rank highly.
The study examines the Graduation Success Rates (GSR) and the Academic Progress Rates (APR) for the tournament teams. The study compares the academic performance of male and female basketball student‐athletes and of African‐American and white basketball student‐athletes.
The University of Vermont women's basketball team, which defeated top-seeded and No. 21-ranked Hartford, 55-50, to win its second straight America East Championship and earn the league's automatic bid, is one of 19 women's teams in the NCAA Championship with a 100 percent graduation rate.
UVM earned a No. 10 seed and will take on No. 7 Wisconsin on Sunday in South Bend, Ind. on the campus of Notre Dame. The game is scheduled for 12:21 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN2
The Catamount men's basketball team, which also won the America East Championship with a victory over Boston University and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, ranked sixth out of the 65 NCAA participants with a 92 percent graduation rate.
UVM, which earned a No. 16 seed, takes on No. 1 Syracuse on Friday in Buffalo, N.Y. at the HSBC Arena. The game is scheduled to tip off at 9:35 p.m. and will be broadcast nationally on CBS.
The author of the study is Dr. Richard Lapchick, who is director of The Institute and of the DeVos Sport Business Management Graduate Program at UCF. The study was co‐authored this year by Jamile M. Kitnurse and David Benoit.
NCAA statistics were used in the study. The Institute reviewed 2002‐03 graduation (six‐year) rates, with a four class average (freshman classes of 1999‐00, 2000‐01, 2001‐02, and 2002‐03). That included the class that should have graduated within six years by 2008‐09, the last period reported to the NCAA.
The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport serves as a comprehensive resource for issues related to gender and race in amateur, collegiate and professional sports. The Institute researches and publishes a variety of studies, including annual studies of student‐athlete graduation rates and racial attitudes in sports, as well as the internationally recognized Racial and Gender Report Card, an assessment of hiring practices in coaching and sport management in professional and college sport.
Additionally, The Institute conducts diversity management training in conjunction with the National Consortium for Academics and Sports. The Institute also monitors some of the critical ethical issues in college and professional sport, including the potential for exploitation of student‐athletes, gambling, performance‐enhancing drugs and violence in sport.

Joslyn James published Tiger Woods’ text messages

Joslyn James published Tiger Woods’ text messages: Joslyn James, who claimed that she had a three-year intimate relationship with Tiger Woods, posted text messages online Thursday that she says the golfer sent her last year.
Veronica Siwik Daniels, the real name of Joslyn James, is one of Tiger’s many alleged mistresses. The former porn star claims that she and the golfer had unprotected sex several times and became pregnant by him twice. She said her first pregnancy ended in a miscarriage and the second in an abortion.
James has set up a website featuring X-rated text messages she claims were sent to her by the golfer. The Web site displayed 120 text messages purported to have been sent to her by Woods between July and October of last year.
“I just wanted to let the public know what the relationship was and that he has not taken responsibility for his behavior,” said James explaining her actions.
TMZ reported that the text messages of Tiger Woods to Joslyn James will be posted on sextingjoslynjames.com.

Your New Mistress: Michelle “Bombshell” McGee

If you thought Catwoman was the worst an Oscar curse could dish out, then consider Michelle "Bombshell" McGee -- the first mistress in a long time that doesn't belong to Tiger Woods. How refreshing! McGee is claiming that she was having an affair with Sandra Bullock's husband Jesse James, while the actress was doing some Oscar-winning acting in Atlanta on the set of The Blind Side. According to In Touch, who broke the story, James made McGee think that he and Bullock were separated, and she would have never slept with him if she knew his true marital status. Never! Because that would be wrong. From a woman who's Twitter handle is EvilCunt, that kind of self-victimization is a little tough to swallow.

The real victim in all this is Sandra Bullock of course, who not only had to come tumbling down from her Oscar high (which we’re told lasts about 14 days max), but now has to contend with the fact that maybe it was her nonstop work schedule that drove her man into the arms of another woman. That, or his tattoo fetish. James was formerly married to the pornstar Janine Lindemulder, who, like Ms. McGee, has a shitload of tats (and again, like McGee, is pursuing work in the tattoo industry). Bullock also canceled her appearance at the London premiere of The Blind Side due to “unforeseen personal reasons,” according to a statement from Warner Bros.

Ooooh michelle, welcome to the shit show, don’t worry about a thing, ill bring over all my trucker hats and big sunglasses to hide u from the paparazzi, or u can just walk behind my big ass when we go out! Loves ya!!

Rocker Alex Chilton of the 'Box Tops' dies

Rock guitarist and singer Alex Chilton, known for his work with bands the Box Tops and Big Star, died Wednesday.
He was 59.
Chilton was having heart problems and died in an emergency room in New Orleans, Louisiana, said longtime friend and business associate John Fry.
"Obviously, we are all stunned and deeply saddened at this news," Fry said.
Chilton started in music as a teen in the 1960s, as vocalist for the psychedelic soul group the Box Tops, Fry said. They were known for the No. 1 hit "'The Letter" and songs such as "Neon Rainbow" and "Cry Like a Baby."
After that group disbanded in 1970, Chilton formed the Memphis rock group Big Star.
Though that band had a short life, breaking up in 1974, its music catapulted the group and Chilton to cult status.
"While Big Star struggled with success commercially, their early '70s, power-pop sound is often cited as directly influencing bands like Cheap Trick, R.E.M. and the Replacements," Billboard magazine said in its biography of Chilton's group.
The evidence of that: a song the Replacements released in 1987, called "Alex Chilton."
Part of the chorus of that song is "Children by the million sing for Alex Chilton when he comes 'round. They sing, I'm in love."
In the 1990s, Big Star got back together.
Chilton and the band were scheduled to perform at the South by Southwest music festival in Texas this weekend.

Code Red: Health reform in homestretch?

Pelosi
The National Republican Congressional Committee for weeks has been sending releases hammering Democrats with shaky re-election prospects, reminding that health care reform votes could come back to haunt them in November 2010. That effort has been ramped up as it appears federal health care reform led by Democrats is imminent. Now the NRCC titles releases with “Code Red,” and points to holdout Dems who will “cave” and vote along with the House leadership headed by Nancy Pelosi (above).
Is health care reform in the homestretch, as this piece by NPR is titled? The thought a few weeks ago was that reform was indeed nearing completion, until Republican Scott Brown amazingly won the Massachusetts Senate seat opened by the death of Ted Kennedy. With Brown’s election went the 60-vote filibuster-proof margin for Dems and the two independents who vote with them, making for a roadblock that shut down Democrats.
Homestretch? If Democrats will indeed use a reconcilation process, then reform may be at hand. One of the House Dem leaders of reform, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland yesterday tweeted that a series of reform votes are anticipated for late this week, including possibly some on the weekend.
The sole  Siouxland  Democratic member of the House, Stephanie Herseth Sandlin of South Dakota, a few days ago said she was not on board with reform if it involves reconcilation. And late last nite, Iowa 5th District Congressman Steve King, an impassioned voice against “toxic” reform, tweeted that the process has become macabre: Obamacare: Senate can’t now pass Senate bill, but House must pass Senate bill, Senate must pass fix so House can pass Senate fix – macabre.

Code Red | Tea Party Patriots fire up Kill the Bill engines

Code Red, Dorothy! Get in the cellar, because the health care bill may pass this week!

The United States Senate is quickly approaching a vote on the current rendition of the health care bill, and tensions are reaching the boiling point. According to Talk Radio News Service, Tea Party Patriots staged a “Code Red” rally in Washington, D.C. in which Republican speakers like Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann assured their faithful that that Republicans are winning the debate. However, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs has gone on record as saying that a health care bill will pass the House “in a week.” If Republicans are going to “kill the bill,” they may need a last-second Hail Mary, a la Doug Flutie.

Code Red Republicans may need some Flutie-esque luck

I use the Flutie football analogy here because of something columnist George Will once said about football. He said it encapsulates two of the worst things about America: violence and committee meetings. Tea parties – as well as their counter-”patriot” equivalents – offer ample servings of both, so long as we remember that the dissemination of hate is a form of violence. That makes up for those rallies where physical violence actually fails to occur or people simply forget to bring their assault weapons. Hopefully they know that low interest loans are great for firearm safety courses.

Is there evidence in the numbers of Wall Street as to what direction the wind is blowing? Jim Cramer of “Mad Money” seems to think so. Cramer believes the current health care bill will pass, and that it will cost America dearly. We’re talking deeper recession dearly. “We have to wonder if this is one of those occasions, like in 2008, where the market doesn’t see the coming catastrophe. Or perhaps the market sees any resolution as positive,” he writes for RealMoney.
Jim Cramer sees the floodgates opening

Cap and trade, card check unionization and immigrant amnesty are on the way, claims Cramer. He cites Wal-Mart’s “inability to move even on its dividend boost” as a sign that union pressure may invade even the Walton corporate sanctuary. To pay for it all, where do you think the money will come from? Cramer says higher tax rates, including capital gains and dividend tax rates, by 2011. The massive projected costs of the current health care bill will “put the double-dip recession back on the table,” in Cramer’s estimation.
Meanwhile, Democrats are preparing to deal with Code Red tea parties

Doug Thornell, the National Press Secretary for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), sent an e-mail to “Freshman and Sophomore House Democrats” regarding “Tea Party etiquette.” Their concern is decorum, while Republicans are bracing for impact. Do you know where your fast cash loans are, in case the economic winter deepens?

Shia LaBeouf 'Getting Through' Hand Injury

Action star Shia LaBeouf is just as tough off screen as he is on.
"I'm just propped up right now to do Transformers 2," LaBeouf told PEOPLE of his left hand at Tuesday's Eagle Eye premiere in Hollywood. "Then, when I get another surgery, I'll start recovering. Right now, I'm getting through."

It was his first red carpet appearance since the July 27 DUI citation and accident that crushed his hand. The 22-year-old kept the healing appendage, which was in a white protective guard, in his pocket for most of the night. And when asked if he was "70- to 80-percent back to normal," LaBeouf joked, "I haven't percentaged it out."

LaBeouf's hand injury, which left two of his fingers broken, forced a script rewrite of Transformers 2, which is currently in production. The changes are minor, according to one of the movie's writers.

"It will be a part of it," Alex Kurtzman, Transformers 2 co-writer and Eagle Eye producer, said. "Very little, actually, very little. Without giving too much away, it actually fit very organically into what we were already doing."

LaBeouf revealed to PEOPLE that it's the elaborate action sequences with explosions on Eagle Eye, Transformers 2, and Indiana Jones 4 where actors stand to get injured.

"You start pushing it a little bit. The scary thing about doing it so often is you take certain things for granted," he said. "You forget to put the elbow pad on, and you wind up wrecking your elbow … You become jaded. It's work to not become jaded."

Tess Taylor And Alexis Neiers On Pretty Wild Tv Show

When detectives investigating a rash of burglaries at the homes of young celebrities raided a Westlake Village house in October, they turned up a Marc Jacobs handbag reported stolen by the actress Rachel Bilson, a Chanel necklace reported missing by Lindsay Lohan and an E! channel camera crew filming a reality show.

Tess (19), Alexis (18) and Gabrielle (15) — are Hollywood hotties. Tess is a model who dates a “Who’s Who of Hollywood” and frequents the hottest celebrity hangouts. Lexi endures the paparazzi and a possible stalker after gaining fame following her arrest for her alleged role in the “bling ring” that broke into Orlando Bloom’s home. After being home-schooled, Gabby is now trying to live like a normal teenager — from getting her driver’s permit to her first date — while keeping the family grounded through Lexi’s legal troubles. Their mother, Andrea, is a wild-child turned model turned self-help enthusiast who gives her three children too much freedom to experience the temptations of Tinseltown.

Andrea Arlington, the mom, is a former model who has posed for Playboy.

Tess Taylor, 19, who is described by E! as the oldest sister, is reportedly not really Andrea Arlington’s daughter or the sibling of Alexis and Gabrielle. She is known as a party girl and works as a model.

Alexis Neiers, 18, is the family member who has made the most headlines. She was arrested on suspicion of burglarizing celebrity homes in a Hollywood burglary ring now known as the The Burglar Bunch.

Gabrielle “Gabby” Neiers, 15, is the little sister who hasn’t done anything scandalous — yet.

I saw the promo for these hoes n I LOVE THEM HAHA So I’m putting u up on game right now. THESE THE BROADS IM PSYCHED ABOUT haha RESPECT YOW WOWW HAHA

Hannah Montana Forever – Miley Cyrus Promises!

hannah montana
Yesterday, Hannah Montana fans saw a commercial featuring Miley Cyrus assuring them quite simply, “Hannah Montana Forever”. According to Lalate, this is not a promise of life beyond Season 4, which kicks off this July on the Disney Channel and is reportedly the swan song season for Cyrus and the show. There seems to be some confusion about the TV spot (see below), but I’m not seeing it, just seems like a rather standard promo for season 4 to me.
Miley has been in the news quite a bit this week with a new film – The Last Song – coming out at the end of the month (literally, March 31st!). She was also joined by her father in filming a special episode for military families (real heroes!).
Should there be a more Hannah past season 4?

Review – Pretty Wild on E!

Here's a confession of mine: I don't normally like reality TV.  Although, this probably isn't the best way to begin an introduction to a review of "Pretty Wild", the newest reality series from E!, which premieres at 10:30 p.m. on March 14.
Pretty Wild is the story of three sisters and their lives in Hollywood (read: their unending desire to become famous).
The show follows the lives of three sisters: Tess Taylor (19), Alexis Neiers (18) and Gabrielle Neiers (15), and their unconventional Hollywood family.  The series presents an unfiltered look at Hollywood from the perspective of the sisters whose jaw-dropping looks and unstructured upbringing makes them magnets for those who have fallen for Tinseltown's many temptations.
Tess and Alexis live like the stars, from partying with the "who's who" of young Hollywood to dating the hottest bad boys.  Their eccentric mom, Andrea, a former [Playboy] model with a heart of gold, is trying to learn how to rein in her daughters, particularly Tess who she constantly struggles to communicate with.  Luckily Gabrielle ("Gabby") resists most of the trouble that seems to find her enigmatic sisters, at least so far.
Tess works as a model and is hoping her recent appearances in multiple magazines will help take her career to the next level, including into the world of music videos.
Lexi, the middle sister, has a love/hate relationship with Tess and has often been jealous of all the attention that Tess gets when she goes out.  But recently Lexi is getting more attention than she could have ever imagined following her arrest as part of an alleged burglary sing.  The series follows Lexi as she faces unanticipated new challenges as she's thrown into a chaotic legal process, from preparing for her upcoming trial to dealing with the paparazzi to addressing a possible stalker situation.
Although she's the youngest, Gabby tends to act like the most mature of the bunch and is regarded as the moral center of the family.  She has been home-schooled in the past and is now trying to live like a normal teenager, from getting her driver's permit to dating for the first time.  She is deeply affected by Lexi's recent troubles and does her best to keep the family grounded through it all.
I watched the pilot episode earlier today and didn't expect to like it.  After all, like I said, I don't like reality TV.  Especially about young, spoiled, entitled girls who would do anything to become famous.
Admittedly, there are several things about this family that are completely ridiculous.  Let's start with the fact that the mother, Andrea, home-schools the girls based entirely on the principles of "The Secret". Yes, SERIOUSLY.  I'm hoping somewhere in the middle of putting together their vision boards they're actually learning more useful things like math and science, but those parts weren't shown in the episode.  At the very least, that had me laughing out loud.  But then, I always get a laugh from being amused by ridiculous people.
Other parts are typical young Hollywood reality show – like the clearly underage girls partying in clubs, practicing their stripper pole dancing, and trying to land modeling contracts.  Those parts just make me roll my eyes – or, in the case of the stripper poles, make me weep for the future of these children.
But the best part is Lexi's legal troubles.  Honestly, it's like a train wreck – I just can't look away. Because it's showing us the consequences of the stupid, stupid mistakes girls like Lexi make.  These party girls who grow up too fast and think that the rules don't apply to them.  For those who don't know, Lexi was arrested in conjunction with the "Bling Ring" – the group of young guys and girls who allegedly burglarized the homes of Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom, Lindsay Lohan, Audrina Partridge, and Megan Fox.  My cursory research has shown that the outcome of the case hasn't been decided yet, but that may be wrong.  In any event, it's interesting to see this spoiled teen deal with lawyers and courtroom appearances.  Not because I derive some sort of sick thrill from watching people suffer, but because for all of the 80 minutes behind bars that celebrities tend to face (ie. Nicole Ritchie), it's still interesting to watch the rich and famous (or infamous – or D list) people have to take a walk on the real side of life sometimes.  And believe me, the consequences begin in the pilot episode.  It's not all stripper poles and martinis when you run with the wrong crowd, kiddies.
So do I like reality TV now?  Not really.  But there were parts of Pretty Wild that kept me entertained. That doesn't mean I'm going to start watching The Bachelor though.  Not after that girl announced that she "likes bears", as if "liking bears" is a great conversation starter.

'Airplane' & 'Mission: Impossible' Star Peter Graves Dies At 83

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Peter Graves, the tall, stalwart actor likely best known for his portrayal of Jim Phelps, leader of a gang of special agents who battled evil conspirators in the long-running television series "Mission: Impossible," died Sunday.

Graves died of an apparent heart attack outside his Los Angeles home, publicist Sandy Brokaw said. He would have been 84 this week.

Graves had just returned from brunch with his wife and kids and collapsed before he made it into the house, Brokaw said. One of his daughters administered CPR but was unable to revive him. Graves' family doctor visited the house and believed he had a heart attack, Brokaw said.

Although Graves never achieved the stardom his older brother, James Arness, enjoyed as Marshal Matt Dillon on TV's "Gunsmoke," he had a number of memorable roles in both films and television.

Normally cast as a hero, he turned in an unforgettable performance early in his career as the treacherous Nazi spy in Billy Wilder's 1953 prisoner-of-war drama "Stalag 17."

He also masterfully lampooned his straight-arrow image when he portrayed bumbling airline pilot Clarence Oveur in the 1980 disaster movie spoof "Airplane!"
Classic Peter Graves In "Airplane":

Graves appeared in dozens of films and a handful of television shows in a career of nearly 60 years.

The authority and trust he projected made him a favorite for commercials late in his life, and he was often encouraged to go into politics.

"He had this statesmanlike quality," Brokaw said. "People were always encouraging him to run for office. But he said, 'I like acting. I like being around actors.'"

Graves' career began with cheaply made exploitation films like "It Conquered the World," in which he battled a carrot-shaped monster from Venus, and "Beginning of the World," in which he fought a giant grasshopper.

He later took on equally formidable human villains each week on "Mission: Impossible."

Every show began with Graves, as agent Phelps, listening to a tape of instructions outlining his team's latest mission and explaining that if he or any of his agents were killed or captured "the secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions."

The tape always self-destructed within seconds of being played.
Peter Graves

The show ran on CBS from 1967 to 1973 and was revived on ABC from 1988 to 1990 with Graves back as the only original cast member.

The actor credited clever writing for the show's success.

"It made you think a little bit and kept you on the edge of your seat because you never knew what was going to happen next," he once said.

He also played roles in such films as John Ford's "The Long Gray Line" and Charles Laughton's "The Night of the Hunter," as well as "The Court-Martial of Billy Mitchell," ''Texas Across the River" and "The Ballad of Josie."

Graves' first television series was a children's Saturday morning show, "Fury," about an orphan and his untamed black stallion. Filmed in Australia, it lasted six years on NBC. A western, "Whiplash," also shot in Australia, played for a year in syndication, and the British-made "Court-Martial" appeared on ABC for one season. In his later years, Graves brought his white-haired eminence to PBS as host of "Discover: The World of Science" and A&E's "Biography" series.

He noted during an interview in 2000 that he made his foray into comedy somewhat reluctantly.

Filmmakers Jim Abrahams and David and Jerry Zucker had written a satire on the airplane-in-trouble movies, and they wanted Graves and fellow handsome actors Lloyd Bridges, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15XlSbGzGTkNielsen and Robert Stack to spoof their serious images.
Another classic from "Airplane":

All agreed, but Graves admitted to nervousness. On the one hand, he said, he considered the role a challenge, "but it also scared me."

"I thought I could lose a whole long acting career," he recalled.

"Airplane!" became a box-office smash, and Graves returned for "Airplane II, The Sequel."

Born Peter Aurness in Minneapolis, Graves adopted his grandfather's last name to avoid confusion with his older brother, James, who had dropped the "U'' from the family name.

He was a champion hurdler in high school, as well as a clarinet player in dance bands and a radio announcer.

After two years in the Air Force, he enrolled at the University of Minnesota as a drama major and worked in summer stock before following his brother west to Hollywood.

He found enough success there to send for his college sweetheart, Joan Endress. They were married in 1950 and had three daughters — Kelly Jean, Claudia King and Amanda Lee — and six grandchildren.

Graves credited the couple's Midwest upbringing for a marriage that lasted more than 50 years in a town not known for long unions.

"Hollywood or New York ... can be very flighty and dangerous places to live, but the good grounding we had in the Midwest ethic I think helped us all our lives," he said.
